Main Punjab di kudi haan, says Kirron

CHANDIGARH: “Main Punjabi haan, mera naa Kirron Sandhu hai, hor main Sandhu khandan di haan. Mai Punjab di kudi haan, hor main apna bachpan aider hi guzaria hai, te padhai vi aithe hi keeti hai.” (I am Punjabi. My name is Kirron Sandhu. I belong to the Sandhu family, and I have spent my childhood and done my education here itself). These were the words of BJP MP candidate Kirron Kher, while she was addressing industrialists at a hotel in the city’s Industrial Area, organized by the BJP’s industrial cell on Wednesday.
Kher has been facing acute criticism and protests from workers and leaders of her own party since the day she arrived in Chandigarh to contest the election. Therefore, she is smartly and intelligently trying to convince the residents of the city that she has a firm and long association with the city, and thus she should not be viewed as an outsider. The ‘outsider’ tag on her was the prime reason for the resignation of some key leaders of the city’s BJP unit two days ago.
“I used to come here frequently, and moreover, I spent my childhood here. Besides, I have completed my basic and higher education from here. Those who say I don’t know the streets of localities and villages of the union territory should first answer why, despite being in power for 15 years, the roads in colonies and villages are in such a pathetic condition. I have come here to serve the people of my city,” Kher told the gathering of industrialists.
A senior BJP leader said: “There is no doubt that the ‘outsider’ issue is a major challenge for us. Some opposition parties are raising this issue, and will do so in the future too. But, we will tackle it very tactfully. Therefore, the main focus of Kher in her speeches and public interactions will be to show her association with the city.”
TREADING ‘KHER’FULLY
Both senior leaders of the party a?? former MP Satya Pal Jain, and party president Sanjay Tandon a?? were seen accompanying Kirron Kher, not only for campaigning, but also to alert and advise her what to say on which subject. Since Kirron is not much aware about all the major issues related to the city, the leaders were seen murmuring in her ears before she gave an answer to each question. Not only this, Kher was also holding a paper to see what to say on which issue. She even avoided talking to the media on Wednesday, and requested them to meet her at the media briefing, scheduled for Thursday.
