'1920 Evil Returns' opens big, 'Chicken Khurana' is lukewarm

From the seven releases of the week, only two have managed to survive at the box-office this Friday.

Of the seven releases of the week, only two managed to survive at the box-office. Vikram Bhatt produced 1920 Evil Returns worked well with horror genre fans and managed an opening weekend collection of Rs 12 crores - a very good figure with respect to the moderate budget at which the film is made.

Anurag Kashyup and UTV Production's Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana met with a lukewarm response at the box-office. Positive reviews and good word of mouth helped the film gain a decent start but the film could only manage an opening weekend collection of around Rs 6 crore. A major portion of the revenue has come from North territory where the film is set.

All the other releases including Rajpal Yadav's directorial debut Ata Pata Lapata, Aamir Bashir's Future Toh Bright Hai Ji, the animated flick Sons of Rama, the revived print of cult-comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Le Gaya Saddam - more or less went unnoticed at the box-office.

The coming Friday sees just one release called It's Rocking... Dard-e-Disco. Not much can be said about this film which stars Aryeman Ramsay and Akshay Kapoor.

Interestingly this Friday is the lull before the storm - the storm that's going to strike the Bollywood box-office next week with two big releases fighting it out for the Diwali slot. Yash Chopra's last directorial venture Jab Tak Hai Jaan starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma is undoubtedly hot property. And Ajay Devgn who is enjoying unparalleled success at the box-office strikes back with Son of Sardaar costarring Sanjay DuttSonakshi Sinha and Juhi Chawla.

However unlike the regular clashes at the box-office, trade circles are often upbeat about two films releasing at the Diwali holiday season. That's because Diwali is largely considered as a period where audiences are willing to spend and both films can coexist, based on their merits.
